Prabuddhakeralam - Awakened Kerala
Prabuddhakeralam, the Malayalam spiritual magazine published from Sri Ramakrishna Math Thrissur is 97. The magazine occupies the fourth rank in the chronology of the Ramakrishna Mission periodicals.October, 17, 1915 saw the first Prabuddhakeralam released on the sacred Vijaya Dashami Day. The editor was Swami Nirmalanandaji Maharaj. It was printed at the Quilon S.T. Reddiar Press. Famous men and women of letters regularly contributed content. The content ranged from spirituality to travelogue. The better known contributors then were S.Guptan Nair, Uroob, Kunjunny Master. On a more recent calendar they included literary luminaries such as Sugathakumari, Sukumar Azhikode, Rev. Father. Painadath, K.P.A. Rahim, Thulaseetheerthan,A.V. Gopalakrishna Warier and Amrita Chand. The magazine comes out of the Thrissur Puranattukara Sri Ramakrishna Math from its own print house since 1964 when a print shop came into being there. The magazine did a round of travel through Quilon, Thiruvananthapuram, Alleppy, Thiruvalla, Ottapalam, and Kalady before finally settling at its current place of publication, Trichur. Although the magazine continues to function and flourish without too much dependence on advertising revenues, the publication continues to attract content contributors as well as readers. This is because of an adherence to a strict code of content management. Under the able stewardship of the current editor Swami Sadbhavanandaji, the magazine is now 97 years in the running. No doubt the coming centenary years of Prabuddha Keralam will continue to shed spiritually awakening light and brilliance to the cultural firmament of Kerala and the Malayalam reading public.
